Applications for work permits from nationals of the EU/EFTA are subject to the Switzerland-EU bilateral agreement on the free movement of persons (ALCP) and to the ordinance on the introduction of the free movement of persons (OLCP).
Nationals of the l'EU-17(Germany; Austria; Belgium; Cyprus; Denmark; Spain; Finland; France; Greece; Italy; Ireland; Luxembourg; Malta; Netherlands; Portugal; United Kingdom; Sweden) and of EFTA(Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) benefit from the complete free movement of persons since the 1 st June 2007. The following countries (EU-8) beneficit from the complete free movement of persons since the 1 st May 2011 : Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Slovak Republic. Since 1rst June 2016 Bulgaria and Roumania (EU-2) are full members of EU/EFTA .
As from 1 January 2017, Croatian nationals benefit from the free movement of persons.
However, they are subject to specific restrictions on access to the Swiss labor market (quotas, priority of workers in Switzerland and respect of pay and working conditions) for a maximum transitional period of 10 years.
Attention : Since the entry into force of the agreement, a permit is and will always be necessary in order to carry on a gainful employment in Switzerland!
